The Tuna Fishing Museum > Frank Van de Camp Sr. and Son Frank Van de Camp Sr. & Son, owners of Van Camp Sea Foods standing in front of "The Pirate Ship Restaurant" also known as "Captain Hook's Pirate Ship" and the "Chicken of the Sea (R) Restaurant" in December 1960. The Pirate Ship Restaurant was a Disneyland (R) landmark for 27 years from 1955 until 1982. When the New Fantasyland opened in 1983, the ship was removed. The Van Camp family sold Van Camp (R) Seafoods to Ralston Purina (R) in 1963. The Van de Camp family bought California Tuan Canning Company in 1914 to can albacore. In 1917, it became the first cannery to commercially pack Yellowfin tuna. In the 1930s, Van Camp acquired its first 2 fishing boats. In 1952, the Mermaid first began appearing in the labels of Chicken of the Sea (R) products. By 1956, the company operated canneries in San Diego (California) and Terminal Island (California), American Samoa, and Ponce, Puerto Rico. Due to the financial difficulties, Ralson sold its Van Camp division to P.T. Mantrust of Indonesia in 1988. "Chicken of the Sea" is currently owned by Tri-Union Seafoods LLC of Thailand.
